This limited edition (of 125 each) series of paintings was created to inspire children to think about and appreciate the beauty and wonders in this world,
both natural and man-made.
The underlying theme of these paintings is the dinosaur. The large image of a prehistoric animal serves as a foundation upon which scenes of present day animals and objects are overlayed. these overlaying images of “things that” do the running, jumping, etc. add color to the beast, since we know only the shape of the ancient dinosaurs from their bone structure, and not their coloring.
In each painting there is the image of a child which reinforces each sub-theme… a child swimming, jumping rope, running, flying a kite, and riding a tricycle with a horn. These images are intended to encourage children to think in a personal way of the environment and the living creatures and animated objects which inhabit our environment.
Subtle humor, such as the “running” refrigerator, the “jumping” beans, and the automobile as a “thing with horn”, add emphasis as well as a lighthearted mood to the overall work. Much of the imagery focuses on hope for the future – space vehicles in “Things That Fly” or images of the endangered species which face possible extinction. Here again, the underlying dinosaurs serve to remind us of the dangers the future may hold if we fail to take care of our environment and the creatures it supports. Hope for the future is further emphasized with the depiction of plant life. Those plants include
the common running Morning Glory and wild Johnny Jump-ups as well as the more exotic horned Venus Fly Trap, swimming sea week with flying seeds and leaves.
Each of these paintings was reproduced as a limited edition print for use in the various locations of the daycare center.
